Roger Bassett puts the heat on a clear floating line for salt water.

Cortland claims to have introduced ‘radical new fly line technology’ with its Precision Tropical PE+ Crystal Salt-water lines. Over a period of several weeks, 5 anglers from the Darwin Fly Rodders put this claim to the test by giving the line a real bashing—fish landed on it included a 1.2 m milkfish, 90 cm trevally and 1.12 m queenfish!

It was hot as hell in Darwin at the time, in fact so hot that our plastic lure boxes bent and warped and a small line-cleaning box twisted out of shape.

Apparently it’s been the hottest for some considerable time up here. Despite this, the line was not affected by the heat in any way that we could tell.

Other good points included the fact that even though we didn’t clean the line once, it did not get sticky and attract the sort of rubbish that so many other lines do in the heat. Although we don’t use floating lines a lot up here it was easy to cast and great on the milkies. The line did not tangle… although I should mention that when one of the milkies hit and headed to Indonesia the fellow fishing with it had too much line out and it pulled it all up from the floor in one lot and ran a knot through the runners. But even with the fish on we were able to retrieve the line and undo the knot, then land the fish.

The one ‘bad’ point—if you could call it that—was that once the line was in the water we lost sight of the bloody thing. It became invisible, which may be an advantage for most fishing but for us old blokes it was a bugger to see where our bread flies were when fishing for milkies.

The Precision PE+ Crystal Saltwater Line is a clear, floating line with a monofilament core and specially formulated hardwearing polyethylene/co-polymer jacket (not PVC).
