Chris Beech introduces a pocket-sized, waterproof fly box from C&F Designs.

How many times have you waded just that little bit too deep, and ended up with a wet fly-box as well as wet pants? It’s happened to me plenty of times, whether on a river, lake or flat. When C&F Designs introduced the Grand Slam series of waterproof fly boxes my prayers were only partly answered—as long as I was using a bum bag. But sometimes I just want to throw a single box in my pocket with a spool of tippet material, and go up a creek or onto a flat after a fish or two.

Enter the M Series fly boxes from C&F Designs. There are four models in the range, all featuring micro-slit foam technology. The CF2500 Streamer box is ideal for large freshwater flies and saltwater flies up to #2/0 in size. The CF2544 is an 8-row micro-slit foam box designed for flies from #2 to #16. This one is the perfect size to serve as a lake/bream fly box. The 10-row model CF2555 makes a great all-round trout fly box and will hold wets, dries and nymphs from #4 to #18. The creek crawlers dream is the CF2577, the 14-row version that will hold enough of your arsenal for the longest trek up your favourite water.

All models feature advanced waterproofing technology—a silicone rubber O-ring and positive latching closure for security and peace of mind. Once closed, they are airtight and will float, even with an inventory of flies aboard. They measure approximately 150 mm long by 95 mm wide and are 40 mm deep, roughly in between the C&F Grand Slam and standard micro-slit foam fly box sizes. I like the depth—you can keep larger dry flies without squashing the hackles, and they will comfortably carry saltwater flies up to #2/0, making them very versatile. And yes, they will fit properly into a typical fishing shirt pocket.
