TFO ReelREEL VALUE
Chris Beech test drives the latest range of reels from Temple Fork.

FlyWorld has built a solid reputation for providing Antipodean anglers with quality gear. Adding to their line up of Waterworks, Lamson and Old Florida fly reels is the new range from Temple Fork Outfitters.

TFO has enjoyed immense popularity with its practical range of fly rods based on both value and performance. Add unparalleled back up service, and you know your hard-earned dollars are working for you. It is no surprise then, that TFO fly reels follow the same thread of value and performance.

There are three models of TFO reel, each designated by their outer diameter in inches—models 310, 375 and 425. TFO reels feature a large, wide arbor design with a synthetic disc drag and one way bearing clutch assembly. There are also two shielded bearings in the spool hub, one in the back plate and a subtle outgoing clicker. Drag adjustment is via a knob on the (solid) back plate. All spools are ported, counter balanced and feature handles that are comfortable to use for extended winding.

The anodized finish is the same Titanium colour as TFO’s reel seats, making a nice match when the rod and reel are used together. Machining tolerances are tight, and there is no resistance to winding forward, enabling fast line pick up in the heat of the moment. Left to right hand retrieve is easily changed by flipping over the one way bearing.

I dragged the 375 around for a few weeks and the reel performed well, looked great and has ample backing capacity for #8–#9 outfits. The reels have been field tested from Exmouth to Weipa and have so far brushed off any abuse the anglers and fish attached to them have dished out. They really do have a reputation for fighting well outside their class, and represent great value at under $400. Temple Fork Outfitters fly reels carry a lifetime warranty to the original owner.
