HIGHLAND GOLD –
Tasmanian Fly-Fishing Techniques Vol 1

Brad Harris views Chris Bassano's Tasmanian fly fishing DVD.

For whatever reasons, Highland Gold was first advertised about two years ago, but then vanished from the radar. Well, it’s finally been released–and yes, it was worth the wait!

Presented by professional guide Christopher Bassano, of Rainbow Lodge in Tasmania, it’s the perfect instructional tool for those wishing to fly fish in Tassie. This DVD, part 1, covers tailing trout, mayfly feeders, polaroiding, sea-run trout, and nymphing rivers.

The format is excellent, with Christopher introducing us to each area and then explaining the relevant techniques to achieve success, pointing out the tackle and flies needed along the way. He fishes (and catches) as he talks, with very few ‘talking-head’ scenes. At the end of each ‘chapter’, a screen graphic lists locations, time of year, tackle required, and suitable flies–a summary of what you’ve just been shown.
Christopher is clearly an excellent teacher, and uses several different approaches to get the message through to most learning-types. It is also apparent that he is a talented fisherman, catching dozens of fish in often trying conditions.

Production quality is very high, with no wind-noise or gimmicky graphics, which are two things that often ruin these sorts of productions. Some of the fishing footage is excellent too, and really gives an accurate account of Tasmanian fishing, including chasing tailers in a blizzard!

If you are planning a trip south, or even if you live in Tassie for that matter, this DVD could save you days of self-guided failures. You will learn as much in three hours watching this DVD as you could fishing here for years.

Part 2 is in production, due soon. Two thumbs firmly up.

Priced at $34.95, Highland Gold is widely available at tackle stores and can be ordered from the FlyLife website.
